What is a packaging dieline?
A packaging dieline is the flat technical drawing used to cut and crease board before it is folded into a box, tray, sleeve, or bag. It fixes the structure, panel boundaries, flaps, locks, and glue areas; artwork is positioned on top of that geometry rather than drawn independently from it.
What a dieline contains
The outline usually separates cutting paths from crease paths. Cut paths define the edge of the blank and any slots or openings. Crease paths mark where the board must bend so the panels meet in the intended order.
A production file may also identify glue areas, bleed, safe zones, registration marks, grain or flute direction, and dimensions. Those additions depend on the converter's workflow, so the structural drawing should not invent them when the production specification has not supplied them.
How the flat drawing becomes a package
The blank is cut from sheet or board, creased along controlled fold lines, stripped from the surrounding waste, then folded and joined. A four-digit FEFCO code or a dotted ECMA code describes the structural family, while length, width, depth, material, and production allowances determine the actual blank.
A 3D fold preview is useful because it tests relationships that are hard to read in a flat drawing: which flap closes first, whether a tab reaches its slot, and which panels become visible. It is a structural check, not a replacement for a physical sample or converter approval.
What to confirm before production
Confirm whether dimensions are internal or external, select the actual board grade and caliper, and ask which allowances the cutting-die maker expects. Check that every panel has the correct artwork orientation after folding and that barcodes, small text, and legal marks stay clear of cuts and creases.
Exporting a clean drawing is the start of prepress, not final approval. Proof the artwork at scale, build a sample in the selected material, and approve the production file with the converter who will run it.
